Client: Large Dairy Manufacturer
Project: Environmental Compliance Services
Location: New Jersey
Description: EWMA's client, a large dairy manufacturer, decided to take a pro-active approach to environmental compliance issues. EWMA first began working with this client in 1989, when they needed to have an underground storage tank (UST) system removed and properly closed. This marked the beginning of a long-term relationship that went from the removal/replacement of multiple UST systems to remediating soil and ground water contamination. EWMA continues to handled all the company's environmental and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) compliance issues.
In anticipation of future changes in the regulations governing USTs, our client decided to remove and replace all of their aging tank systems. In March of 1990, a total of ten tanks were removed and new fiberglass-coated USTs were installed to meet the upcoming regulatory requirements for tank systems. Following removal and replacement of the tanks, EWMA successfully remediated the soil and ground water at the property and obtained case closure with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) via the less costly natural attenuation approach (the standard at the time was the operation of pump and treatment systems).
While providing services for our client, EWMA developed a Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan, and has continued to update and maintain this plan annually. In 1994, EWMA designed an underground clarifier system, as a pre-treatment unit for their existing waste water treatment system. The clarifier is used for pH neutralization and for the reduction of Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Total Suspended Solid (TSS) loadings within the process waste water stream. As a result of the system installation, sewerage discharge fees have been significantly reduced and discharge compliance attainment is 100%.
EWMA continues to assist our client with a multitude of compliance matters, including: the New Jersey Toxic Catastrophic Prevention Act (TCPA) requirements for their refrigeration system, OSHA compliance audits, OSHA training, Right-to-Know compliance audits, process management surveys and emergency response procedures. As part of the TCPA compliance, EWMA conducts drills of evacuation procedures twice annually, assists in the constant monitoring and maintenance of the refrigeration operations, and prepares an annual report of site conditions for submittal to the NJDEP.
