Project:  Wetlands Restoration

Description:  In the 1980s, a landfill was created next to wetlands in Morris County, New Jersey.  EWMA was contracted by the landfill owner to cap the landfill.  However, some of the landfill had impacted the surrounding wetlands and wetlands restoration was necessary.

The landfill was capped with a two foot layer of clean fill.  After EWMA finished capping, we commenced the effort to restore the wetlands within a two-year timeframe.  This included the excavation of land-filled materials within the southern and northern wetland areas and the relocation of these materials onto the landfill proper.

The wetlands were restored by planting wetland trees and plants.  Problems were encountered during the first year of wetland restoration, because the deer in the area ate all the plants and trees necessary to restore the wetlands.  Therefore, EWMA replaced the plants and trees and put up an eight-foot snow fence around the area.

The wetlands were restored within the project budget and two-year project timeframe.
