In the past, metal lead pigments were used in the manufacture of paint because the pigments made the paint last longer, cling to surfaces better, and had mold resistant properties. In 1978 the Federal government banned lead-based paint. While a declining problem, lead paint and/or lead pipes or soldering is still present and can be found in many older buildings and in the surrounding soil, dust, or drinking water.
