Commercial and Industrial Underground Storage Tank Services

With more stringent regulations and increased liabilities associated with underground storage tanks, it is especially important to hire a qualified and registered professional like EWMA when removing, replacing, or upgrading an underground storage tank system.  Whether your project involves one tank or multiple tanks, EWMA has the experience and qualifications to manage your project from start to finish.  We regularly qualify Cleanup Star projects to expedite No Further Action (NFA) letters.

EWMA is well-versed in the federal and state regulations for underground storage tank systems.  Our technical staff members have completed 40-hour OSHA training and receive the 8-hour refresher course every year.  EWMA's staff is also certified to conduct subsurface investigations and various underground storage tank services.

Some of the services that EWMA provides for owners/operators of underground storage tanks include:

New Tank System Design, Installation and Upgrade

EWMA has extensive experience designing and installing underground storage tanks (USTs) that are resistant to corrosion, thereby reducing the risk of leaks from the tank or the piping leading to/from the tank.  We are certified to conduct subsurface evaluation of soil and groundwater.  EWMA follows strict NJDEP and local guidelines when designing and installing an underground storage tank.

The design and installation of a UST is a three stage process.

1.    Designing and Underground Storage Tank System to meet the customer’s needs.
2.    Preparation of permit applications for installing and upgrading UST systems.
3.    UST Installation activities.

Our experience goes beyond just the tank removal and includes technical assessments associated with leaking underground storage tanks including:

  • Plume dating which is determining when a tank leak first occurred. This scientific analysis is useful to support insurance claims and disputes between former owners of UST storage facilities to determine liability for remediation of contaminated site.
  • Natural Resource Damage Assessment to determine the impact of UST discharges on groundwater, wetlands, and water bodies.

EWMA will design upgrade or replace either underground storage tanks (UST) or aboveground storage tanks (AST) systems on a site specific basis.  EWMA determines the most cost-effective and environmentally sound approach for tank design and installation.

Tank Removal

EWMA has extensive experience removing underground storage tanks.  EWMA follows strict NJDEP and local guidelines and permitting requirements when removing an underground storage tank.  Activities include:

  • Excavation to the top of the tank to expose the tank
  • Removal of all product that can be pumped, and the cleaning and disposal of the product.
  • Removal of the tank from the excavation pit
  • Cutting and properly disposing of the tank
  • Removal of the fill pipe, vent pipe and product piping (if accessible and if requested by the client) up to the building foundation.
  • Stockpiling and properly covering contaminated soil, if necessary.
  • Backfilling the excavation area to grade with certified clean fill material.
  • Removal of debris generated during the tank removal activities.

Post-Closure Site Assessments and Remedial Action

Often properties containing underground storage tanks (USTs) need to undergo an environmental site assessment to determine the environmental condition of the property in the area of the underground storage tanks.  A Remedial Action Report detailing the post-closure site assessment has to be filed with the governing regulatory body (e.g. EPA or NJDEP).  EWMA has extensive experience performing post-closure site assessments, as well as writing and submitting Remedial Action Reports to the proper authorities to obtain a No Further Action (NFA) letter, which completes the tank closure process.
