The beginning of the year is a good time to review your company’s New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) Compliance Reporting Requirements for hazardous materials. Two dates are important. March 1^st is the due date for the NJ Community Right to Know (CRTK) Survey and the Hazardous Waste Generators Report. On July 1^st the Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) and NJ Release and Pollution Prevention Reports (RPPP) are due. 

 

The CRTK Survey is required of certain businesses to report the locations and quantities of chemicals stored on-site to state and local governments in order to help communities prepare to respond to chemical spills and similar emergencies. The primary purpose of the CRTK is to inform communities and citizens of chemical hazards in their areas

 

The Hazardous Waste Generator Report is a biennial (used to be annual) report that identifies the amount of hazardous waste disposed of from the preceding year. The report is based on the status of the generator; Small Quantity Generators (SQG), Large Quantity Generators (LQG) and Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Generators (CESQG).

 

The TRI is an annual inventory of Environmental Hazardous Substances (EHSs) that are manufactured, processed or otherwise at a place of business. This annual report is required by state and federal laws if EHS exceeds certain thresholds. 

 

If a company files a TRI then NJDEP requires the filing of a Release and Pollution Prevention Report (RPPR). The purpose of the RPPR is to collect information on chemical throughput, environmental release, off-site transfer of chemicals, and pollution prevention activities.
