NJDHSS Initiative to Enforce OSHA & CRTK Compliance in Public Schools - 5/16/2008 Back |

By Craig Gorczyca, CHMM
The importance of laboratory safety has been recognized for many years in industry. However, educational institutions have been slower to adopt such safety practices and programs. New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services (NJDHSS) has commenced an enforcement initiative to address chemical management practices used throughout public schools and public buildings.
Potential dangers exist within science programs and custodial supplies. Even common classroom items such as glue and paint are subject to special requirements defined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Community Right-to-Know (CRTK) regulations. Teachers play the most important role in insuring a safe and healthful learning environment for students. All safety programs must actively involve the school administrators, supervisors, teachers, and students.
EWMA can provide guidance to protect the safety and health of students and staff by developing an action plan to review the chemical inventory management, overstocking, improper labeling and storing chemicals according to compatibility and waste stream to meet all compliance rules.
