Objectives/Background:  To investigate, design, and implement a cleanup of soil and groundwater impacted through the historic operation of underground storage tanks.  The company (tenant) formerly occupying the property was no longer in business and the owner, our client, was in need of moving efficiently through the cleanup process in order to sell this property.  Soil and groundwater were impacted by the release of various petroleum compounds stored in the three underground storage tanks consisting of a 2,000-gallon gasoline tank, 1,000-gallon diesel tank, and 1,500-gallon #2 fuel oil tank.  Various volatile organic and petroleum hydrocarbon compounds impacted sandy silt material soil.  Groundwater was found to be 7.5 to 9.5 feet below ground surface.

Regulatory Program: NJDEP Bureau of Underground Storage Tanks (BUST)

Solution:  EWMA designed and implemented a guaranteed fixed price cleanup strategy.  Review of previous investigations proved helpful in the streamlining of a limited supplemental remedial investigation of both soil and groundwater to support the design of a fixed price cleanup approach.  The selected remedy was a soil vapor extraction (SVE) and groundwater air-sparging (AS) extraction treatment system.  Two SVE wells 12 feet in depth were connected to 100-cubic feet per minute (cfm) blower venting collected soil vapors through a treatment system composed of three vapor phase granulated activated carbon (GAC) absorption units.  The AS well was approximately 25 feet deep, 60-cfm, GAST reciprocity AS compressor.

Beneficial Outcomes:
The NJDEP granted an unrestricted site use No Further Action (NFA) letter.
